Tadmor is a Syrian barley landrace that has adapted to semi-arid environments. Its leaves are pale green because of a 30% decrease in the chlorophyll and the carotenoid content of the chloroplasts (leading to a 7·5% decrease in light absorption) compared with barley genotypes that are not adapted to harsh Mediterranean climatic conditions (e.g. Plaisant). This difference in pigment content was attenuated during growth of the plants in strong light, but was strongly amplified when strong light was combined with a high growth temperature. The low pigment content of Tadmor leaves was not associated with significant changes in the pigment distribution between the photosystems or between the reaction centres of the photosystems and their associated chlorophyll antennae. No significant difference in the photosynthetic activity (O2 production per unit absorbed light) was observed between Tadmor and Plaisant. The conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin in strong light and its reversal in darkness were much faster and operated at a higher capacity in Tadmor leaves compared with Plaisant leaves, resulting in an increased photostability of photosystem II in the former leaves. The accelerated xanthophylls interconversion in the Syrian landrace was associated with, and possibly related to, an increased fluidity of the thylakoid membranes. The lipid peroxide level was lower in Tadmor compared with Plaisant. In contrast, no difference was found in the non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence between the two barley genotypes. The data indicate that the pale green Syrian landrace is equipped to survive excessive irradiance through a passive reduction of the light absorptance of its leaves, which mitigates the heating effects of strong light, and through the active protection of its photochemical apparatus by a rapid xanthophyll cycling.  相似文献

In mofette fields, natural carbon dioxide springs, organisms have to stand extreme CO2 concentrations up to 100%. These hostile conditions are spatially small-scaled and further influenced by earth tides, wind and temperature. The present project investigated the influence of increased atmospheric CO2 concentration on spiders as representatives of above-ground organisms by means of pitfall traps in three mofette fields, differing in habitat conditions in the Plesná valley, eastern Cheb Basin, Czech Republic.Among the 71 recorded spider species four were rarely found in the Czech Republic. A canonical correspondence analysis revealed significant influences of environmental parameters on the spider assemblages. Two groups of spiders are clearly distinguishable, one being positively influenced by humidity and the second by temperature. A cluster analysis showed distinct and congruent results: spider assemblages of pitfall traps at spots with a mean CO2 concentration above 7.6% grouped close together and this grouping was independent of site. At >7.6% CO2 significantly fewer individuals and species were found in comparison to areas with lower CO2 concentration. Between 2.5 and 10% CO2, spiders indicated increased CO2 concentrations much more sensitively than endogeic organisms (Nematoda, Collembola) in a nearby mofette field. Unlike in nematodes, collembolans and plants, no mofettovageous or mofettophilous spiders were detected. In contrast to humidity, CO2 concentration and temperature, the vegetation cover was not among the factors, which significantly influenced spiders. This is explained by the fact that mofettophilous plants occurred at spots where almost no spiders could live. In a field experiment, most Pardosa pullata males tested passed a 30 cm long corridor with increased carbon dioxide concentration. These results and that of pitfall traps showed that relatively large and wandering specimens respectively were able to transit moderately hostile spots. Further experiments are necessary to find out if there is any active avoidance of high-CO2 areas by spiders.  相似文献

We reported the Australian golden wattle as a copper stabilizer in abandoned copper mine soils earlier. Here we investigate to confirm this plant’s suitability to grow on metal contaminated mine soils based on stress indication. The seeds of Acacia pycnantha collected from mining area were germinated after heat and no heat treatment on two types of irrigation. The daily irrigated and heat treated seeds gave up to 85% germination on sandy soil. The A. pycnantha was grown under greenhouse condition in six different soils collected from abandoned copper mine at Kapunda in South Australia. Among the six soil samples, soil-1 with the highest copper concentration produced 2.05 mmol g−1 tissue of proline. Proline expression was prominent in more saline soils (1, 5 and 6) having electrical conductivity (EC) 1184, 1364 and 1256 μS, respectively. Chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid levels in plants showed a gradually decreasing trend in all the soils as experiment progressed. The plants grown on soil sample-1, containing 4083 ± 103 mg kg−1 of copper resulted in 18 ± 2 mg kg−1 accumulation in its leaf. The calcium accumulation was significant up to 11648 ± 1209 mg kg−1 in leaf. Although pore water samples showed higher Cu concentration in soils, an increased mobility of arsenic and lead was observed in all the soil samples. Our experiment points out the need for proper monitoring of revegetation processes to avoid revegetation and reclamation failure.  相似文献

The antipredator behavior diel vertical migration (DVM), common in aquatic keystone species Daphnia, involves daily migration from warmer surface waters before dawn to cooler deeper waters after dusk. Plasticity in Daphnia DVM behavior optimizes fitness via trade-offs between growth, reproduction, and predator avoidance. Migration behavior is affected by co-varying biotic and abiotic factors, including light, predator cues, and anthropogenic stressors making it difficult to determine each factor's individual contribution to the variation in this behavior. This study aims to better understand this ecologically significant behavior in Daphnia by: (1) determining how Daphnia pulicaria thermal preferences vary within and among natural populations; (2) distinguishing the role of temperature verses depth in Daphnia vertical migration; and (3) defining how two anthropogenic stressors (copper and nickel) impact Daphnia migratory behavior.Simulated natural lake stratification were constructed in 8 L (0.5 m tall, 14.5 cm wide) water columns to monitor under controlled laboratory conditions the individual effects of temperature gradients, depth, and metal stressors on Daphnia vertical migration. Three major findings are reported. First, while no difference in thermal preference was found among the four populations studied, within lake populations variability among isolates was high. Second, decoupling temperature and depth revealed that depth was a better predictor of Daphnia migratory patterns over temperature. Third, exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of copper or nickel inhibited classic DVM behavior. These findings revealed the high variability in thermal preference found within Daphnia populations, elucidated the individual roles that depth and temperature have on migratory behavior, and showed how copper and nickel can interfere with the natural response of Daphnia to fish predator cues. Thus contributing to the body of knowledge necessary to predict how natural populations of Daphnia will be affected by climate related changes in lake temperatures and increased presence of anthropogenic stressors.  相似文献

The patchy distribution of atherosclerosis within arteries is widely attributed to local variation in haemodynamic wall shear stress (WSS). A recently-introduced metric, the transverse wall shear stress (transWSS), which is the average over the cardiac cycle of WSS components perpendicular to the temporal mean WSS vector, correlates particularly well with the pattern of lesions around aortic branch ostia. Here we use numerical methods to investigate the nature of the arterial flows captured by transWSS and the sensitivity of transWSS to inflow waveform and aortic geometry. TransWSS developed chiefly in the acceleration, peak systolic and deceleration phases of the cardiac cycle; the reverse flow phase was too short, and WSS in diastole was too low, for these periods to have a significant influence. Most of the spatial variation in transWSS arose from variation in the angle by which instantaneous WSS vectors deviated from the mean WSS vector rather than from variation in the magnitude of the vectors. The pattern of transWSS was insensitive to inflow waveform; only unphysiologically high Womersley numbers produced substantial changes. However, transWSS was sensitive to changes in geometry. The curvature of the arch and proximal descending aorta were responsible for the principal features, the non-planar nature of the aorta produced asymmetries in the location and position of streaks of high transWSS, and taper determined the persistence of the streaks down the aorta. These results reflect the importance of the fluctuating strength of Dean vortices in generating transWSS.  相似文献
